Told in Tea’s trademark loose-tongued, lyrical style, this gritty, confessional memoir both celebrates and annihilates one girl’s tightrope walk out of a working-class slum and the lessons she carries with her. The sort vulnerability of her sister Madeline, and her quietly brutal Polish father; the doddering, sometimes violent nuns of Our Lady Of Assumption; Marisol Lewis from the projects by the creek; and Johnna Latrotta, the tough-as-nails Italian dance-school teacher who offered a slim chance for escape to every young Chelsea girl in tulle and tap shoes.

Twenty-seven pages of feminist fun! Girls Are Not Chicks is a subversive and playful way to examine how pervasive gender stereotypes are in every aspect of our lives. This book helps to deconstruct the homogeneity of gender expression in children’s media by showing diverse pictures that reinforce positive gender roles for girls. Color the Rapunzel for a new society—she now has power tools, a roll of duct tape, a Tina Turner album, and a bus pass! Paint outside the lines with Miss Muffet as she tells that spider off and considers a career as an arachnologist! Girls are not chicks—girls are thinkers, creators, fighters, healers and superheroes.

Over three dozen cunts of every size and description for you to color. Originally published in 1975 and used for a sex-education class. A timeless classic?

“This book is so wonderful.

Nevermind the fact that I’ve been having a blast breaking out the crayons and coloring the beautifully drawn vaginas…

But this book helps to de-mystify and remind women (or men) of the beauty of the female parts.

This book contains about 25 drawings of flower-like genitalia. Each drawing is beutiful and unique – just in the same way that every woman is beautiful in a different way.

This book presents women’s sexuality is such a matter-of-fact and positive manner. I wish all women could see this book as a child, again as a teen, and again as an adult – to remember to always be proud and never be ashamed.”

The final volume in Dave Douglass’s mining trilogy, Stardust and Coaldust, published to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the end of the miners’ strike. A first-person, insider’s view, of, probably, the last generation of miners and their union.

The definitive history of the great coal strike of 1984/85 and the background to it, this book explodes all the prevailing myths around that epic period, and corrects the inaccuracies in dozens of books previously penned by academics and journalists. Written by a participant at the sharp end of that struggle, it uniquely deals with the poststrike period, which hitherto no other writer has attempted to describe, nor any commentator understood. It portrays the efforts of the miners to stay in the ring and stay on their feet, in the run-up to the John Major assault in ’92/’93 and the last stand of the miners as a social force.

The book reveals the harsh internal relations within the National Union of Mineworkers in the post-strike years, set against a backdrop and commentary on other world and domestic events like the Poll Tax, the Gulf War, and the Good Friday Agreement. Inevitably, it addresses the role of Arthur Scargill both during and after the strike — which in the author’s view displays two distinct and conflicting aspects of his leadership. However, Dave shows how the central role in both periods was that played by the miners themselves organised in their Union. Dave has not sought to exclude those smaller, more personal aspects that intersect this trajectory and link the personal to the political, the major to the minor. Though it is not written in the style or with the pretensions of academic neutrality, this book will be an essential reference for any serious academic study in the future.

The title of this work, Ghost Dancers, is inspired by the last stand of the Native American Indians in their efforts to retain their culture and dignity, and by the Durham Miners’ Gala as a mining equivalent of that same endeavour. The book records the last stand of the last generation of pitmen and their communities.

David Douglass was a pitman for 40 years in the coalfields of the Tyne and South Yorkshire. This book is the second in his trilogy ‘Stardust and Coaldust’ and deals with the period from the end of the 60s to the coming to power of Thatcher. In this stormy 15 year period dramatic events are taking place around the globe. In industrial Europe the working class challenged capitalism and the state, while Britain experienced industrial unrest unseen since the General Strike. The National Union of Mineworkers stormed back from obscurity to face down a government. Rock and Roll is king, sexual freedom is breaking down all inhibitions, all boundaries are being challenged, the wildcat and sex kitten are loose on the street and the fur is flying. David takes us back to a time conventional histories have ignored or glossed over. It is political and social history told by a participant in the events, and contains insightful cameos of pit work and the recent untold history of the Miners’ Union.

30 years a miner and NUM militant, this first part of an autobiographic trilogy — ‘Stardust and Coaldust’ — tells of Dave’s post-war childhood and then teenage years in the maelstrom of the 1960s. Beat poetry and Ban the Bomb, pit apprenticeship and Geordie Cong(!). Anarchism and pacifism. Trotskyist sects, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll. Armed struggle in dialect – ‘politics of the deed’. Read alone of as a set, this book is a real story of working class youth and rebellion.

“In ‘Geordies’, Dave tells us of his beginnings and describes his life as a child in the 1950′s. He tells the reader of his Irish / Northumbrian ancestry and of the visits to Ireland to see his Gaelic grandparents and cousins, their own political ideas as far apart as Cromwell and the Irish Confederate Catholics had ever been, with one part of the family sympathizing with the IRA and another being English Loyalists! He tells of his Irish grandmother, who always greeted guests to the house with, “Will ye no be having a spud?” and of how the visiting ‘English side of the family’ was always treated with a kind of reverence.

He tells us of his childhood battle with TB, of the cockroaches, the squalor, and the outright poverty, which was normal for the working class people of Jarrow. Dave writes of his earliest memories and lays them bare for the reader, sometimes lingering on a topic about a particular memory or incident and sometimes in a pouring forth of brutal honesty, the like of which is rarely heard on this side of the confessional box, which in itself left its own indelible imprint on the young Douglass. And yet, despite the stories of bullying, wanton violence and the horrors of the playground jungle, one soon realises that Dave looked at the world in a more open and questioning way than any of his pompous middle class schoolteachers could ever comprehend. Whilst condemning him to life in the lowest grades they had little idea that by the age of 7 he was already questioning the ethics of killing and eating our fellow creatures and had become a committed vegetarian, or that whilst his class mates were getting to grips with learning to read, Dave was reading about Karl Marx and the history of the Russian revolution.

Between the anecdotes and rhymes, related mainly in Standard English and interspersed with local Geordie dialect where Dave deems it necessary, is an account of the history, which shaped the North East of England, and the people who live there. Throughout his book, Dave, through his reminiscences of his mentor Jonty, tells how his homeland was influenced by the Romans, Vikings, Scots and Angles, making it a unique fusion and stamping an independence of character on the ‘Geordies’.

Dave has managed to create a book which is entertaining, touching, fascinating, and above all, honest. His stories have you laughing out loud at certain characters and their situations, filling your eyes with tears as you feel the sadness of those involved, and squirming with embarrassment at revelations, which you wouldn’t admit even to your best friend.”

The Merger is a collection of cartoons focused on charting the rise of neo-liberalism in New Zealand. The mainstream media were typically uncritical of their new political masters, however, there were organisations and publications that gave voice to much needed critiques and discussions. Cartoons throughout this zine were produced for these groups, such as Corso, Treaty Times, LOOSE, The Big Picture, and CAFCA, and include a number of themes employed through humor, with, and sometimes, outright scathing skill. A great visual zine for the collection.
